Since participating in the first English Composition course at my local community college as a running start student, my heart has been ignited by a curiosity about the power of language to empower and uplift.
Originally from Bellingham, Washington, I graduated from Western Washington University with a B.A. in Creative Writing and Literary Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Technical Writing.
After graduation, I searched internationally for a graduate program that could combine my two passions: writing and teaching. While many Literature M.A. programs offered Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA), I sought a program that would center on pedagogy. In the meantime, I worked at a community college writing center and an intercultural center.
I enrolled in Central Washington University's M.A. in Literary Studies with a Teaching Specialization, and taught 5 quarters of English Composition. Dr. Dan Martin's role-reversal pedagogy professional development drew me into the program, along with the History of Composition and Composition Pedagogy courses. My thesis project, titled "Multimodality and Transfer in First-Year Composition," was awarded at our local symposium.
Currently, I teach Applied English and English Composition as an Adjunct Instructor at Bellingham Technical College.
